There ain’t a lot to do in this town/You drive down to the lake and then you turn back around. —Steve Earle, “Someday.”
So many islands, so much rowing/with invisible oars against the current! —Tomas Tranströmer, “The Indoors is Endless”What brings you to the McDonald’s today?
I just come in here a couple times a week for my supper.
You’re from around here?
That’s right. I live just outside of town. I’ve never really been anywhere else.
What do you do for a living?
I don’t do nothin’. I used to run a high lift over at the brick factory in Sugar Creek, but I retired in 1999.
Do you have any interesting hobbies?
No, I don’t suppose so. I’m pretty set in my ways. I got a lot of grass to mow, and I do a little work around the house. I grew up on a dairy farm, and there was always so much work to do that I never learned to do much else.
